[intervista] Antillectual

1. "Testimony" è il vostro secondo album. Cosa è cambiato nello stile e nella vita degli Antillectual dal primo album "Silencing Civilization"?
"Testimony" is your second full-lenght. What does it change in your style and in your life from your first album "Silencing Civilization"?
Onestamente non penso sia cambiato molto a livello di stile e genere. Dopo tutto penso però che molte cose siano migliorate rispetto all'album precedente.
Abbiamo suonato molto negli ultimi anni e questo non può che averci migliorati come muscisti e come band. Inoltre questo disco è stato registrato con un batterista diverso, in uno studio di registrazione diverso (Die Tonmeisterei) e con un nuovo tecnico del suono (Nico van Montfort).
La produzione di questo disco è avvenuta in modo differente rispetto al precedente e penso che questo abbia dato maggior maturità ai brani. Abbiamo ottenuti ottimi pareri a riguardo e quindi presumo che stiamo crescendo nella direzione giusta.
Well, to be honest, I don't think we changed a lot in terms of style or genre. But over all we progressed a lot since our previous release. We toured and played a lot, which has definitely made us better musicians and a better band. On top of that this last album was recorded with a new drummer, in a different studio (Die Tonmeisterei) and with a different sound engineer (Nico van Montfort). The production of the album is really different from the previous one and the song writing evolved to a bit more maturity I think. We get good responses so I guess we grew in the right direction.

2. La politica è una parte importante di "Testimony", ormai sono poche le band che fanno testi politici, cosa pensate di questo impoverimento della scena punk?
The political aspect is important in "Testimony", today there are non so much band that write this kind of lyrics, what do you think about this aspect in the punk scene??
Per me non è un problema se non molte band scrivono testi politicizzati. E' semplicemente una loro scelta. Allo stesso tempo penso sia sbagliato credere che la gente non apprezzi uscite più politicizzate solo perché a loro volta non scrivono di questo argomento. Spero che loro possano apprezzare le band che seguono questa direzione. Le band non devono sentirsi obbligate a parlare di politica solo perché è una cosa "punk" da fare ma solo se sento sinceramente che sia la giusta strada. Sono contento che esista ancora una scena punk/hardcore/DIY dove i gruppi vogliono esprimere il loro parere a riguardo di questi argomenti. Sicuramente se molte più band "mainstream" avessero scelto questa strada il messaggio sarebbe arrivato molto più facilmente a molta più gente. Ma purtroppo sono poche le band che lo fanno.
For me it's not a shame that not more bands write political lyrics. It's their own choice. Besides, I think it's wrong to assume that people don't care about political issues simply because they don't write lyrics about them. Even though I hope they do care and I like bands that have a political edge to their content. But bands shouldn't be forced to have political lyrics because it is a "punk" thing to do, that way it isn't sincere any way. I'm very happy that there is a platform like the punk/hardcore/DIY scene where bands that want to express their political views in their songs have an outlet. If it was for me more mainstream bands would just as well sing about stuff that really matters, that way the message gets across easier. But few want to, unfortunately.

3. "Testimony" uscirà contemporaneamente per molte etichette europee. In Italia vi siete affidati alla No Reason Records. Come avete conosciuto questa etichetta?
"Testimony" has been released for different labels in Europe, in particoular for NoReason Records in Italy. How did you know this label??
Da tempo conosciamo e siamo amici con i RENTOKILL, band che ha collaborato con NoReason Records, e loro ce ne hanno sempre parlato molto bene. Appena abbiamo registrato le prime versioni "demo" del disco gliele abbiamo inviate e siamo rimasti in contatto.
Poi quando abbiamo suonato a Milano abbiamo avuto modo di conoscerli di persona e parlare di come sarebbe pstato possibile procedere con questa (co)produzione. I loro suggerimenti ci sono sembrati buoni e non possiamo che essere felici di avere il nostro disco fuori in Italia grazie a loro, stanno facendo molto per noi.
We knew from our friends from Rentokill that they were cooperating with No Reason Records and they told us good stories about them. When we recorded demo songs I think we sent them to No Reason too and they got in contact with us. When we played a show in Milano we met up and talked things through how they would work things out for our (co)release. And the things they suggested and the way they handle things really appealed to us. We couldn't be happier having the album released in Italy by them, they are doing an amazing job.

4. cosa significa per voi "punk-rock"? C'è chi pensa che il punk sia stato snaturato dal suo significato originario, basti vedere tutte le band che si definiscono punk e che affollano le classifiche di mezzo mondo. Cosa ne pensate?
What does "punk-rock" mean for you? Someones think that punk has lost its original soul, and we can see a lot of band defined "punk" in the hit parade of all world. What do you think about?
Questa è una domanda molto difficile. Se band più pop e commerciali come Green Day, Offspring e Millencolin non fossero esistite molto probabilmente non sarei mai entrato nella scena punk/hardcore. Grazie a loro sono stato introdotto a questo tipo di musica e hanno messo le basi per permettermi di muovermi verso un punk/hardcore più "underground". Nascono sempre molti dibattiti sulle band che vengono additate come "vendute" (Against Me!, AntiFlag, Rise Against, etc.) ma se gruppi come loro riescono a continuare a vivere grazie a questa decisione chi sono io per poterli giudicare? Per me Punk-rock non significa certo dire ad una band cosa è giusto e cosa è sbagliato, non dovrebbe esistere una "polizia" punkrock che stabilisca questo. Come dicevo prima sono contento che esistano comunque posti dove band come noi, che anche per il contenuto dei nostri testi non riescono ad attirare un pubblico mainstream, possano crescere ed esprimersi.
Questo ci permette di stare in tuor e portare la nostra musica ovunque.
Per ritornare alla domanda originaria, penso cmq che abbandonare la scena di origine solo per poter vivere dei soldi ottenuti suonando di fronte a un pubblico più grande e vario non sia gisuto.
Ovviamente molta gente non sarà d'accordo con me.
That's a difficult and "big" question. If it wasn't for poppy and "commercial" bands like Green Day, Offspring and Millencolin I might not have gotten into this punk/hardcore scene. They introduced me to this kind of music and paved the way for more "underground" oriented punk and hardcore. I know there is a lot of criticism towards bands who "sell out" (Against Me!, AntiFlag, Rise Against, etc.) but as long as bands can live with these decisions their selves who am I to judge them? Punkrock shouldn't be about telling others or other bands what to do and do not, not in my opinion, there shouldn't be a punkrock police. As I said before, I am happy with the way our punk/hardcore scene offers a place for bands that might not appeal to the mainstream public because of their music or lyrical content. It gives small bands like ours the opportunity to tour abroad and get our music out there. But to start a witch hunt on bands that started in this scene and decided to move on to a bigger audience and live from the money they make from this music doesn't feel like "a punk thing" to do to me. Of course there will be many to disagree on this though.

5. La scena punkrock olandese sembra sempre godere di ottima salute, sfornando band mai banali. Ci consigliate qualche nome che forse non conosciamo?
The punk-rock scene in Netherlands appears in a good status, and different personal bands come out.
Could you suggest to us some bands that maybe we don't know??
Hai ragione, la scena in Olanda è veramente ottima, ci sono moltissime band che stanno nascendo e molte altre che stanno cercando di suonare anche all'estero. Vi consiglio di avvicinarvi a band come Smash The Statues, Tenement Kids, Brat Pack, Gewapend Beton, The Real Danger, solo per citarne alcuni. Sono band che stanno lavorando sodo, hanno la giusta attitudine e personalmente ritengo che meritino di essere ascoltate. Ci sono poi anche altre piccole band che stanno facendo ottime cose. Onestamente, a causa delle tantissime band presenti, ci sono tanti concerti Olanda e la gente può decidere a quale show andare ed essere viziata da così tanta qualità.
Questo fa si che la maggior parte dei gruppi vuole venire a suonare in Olanda, magari cercando concerti migliori di quelli che avrebbero nel loro paese.
Ovviamente non è sempre così, ma questo capita molto spesso…
Indeed, the Dutch scene is very vibrant, more and more bands are being born and more bands try to tour abroad as well. Bands that you should definitely check out are Smash The Statues, Tenement Kids, Brat Pack, Gewapend Beton, The Real Danger to name just a couple. They are all working hard, have a nice attitude and deserve to be heard, in my opinion. And there are so many more local bands doing an excellent thing. Honestly, there might be too much shows in Holland, because of the enormous amount of bands. People can go to too many shows and get spoiled with so much quality. On top of that all major bands want to stop by in Holland, to smoke some stuff they are not aloud in their own country and play a crappy show because they are stoned. Well not all of them of course, but it happens more than once ...

6. So che siete stati in tour anche negli Stati Uniti, come è stata quell'esperienza?
I know that you toured in USA. How have this experience been??
Siamo stati in tour due volte negli USA ed è stato un sogno che si avverava. Gran parte della musica che ascoltiamo proviene dagli USA ed aver la possibilità di andarci a suonare è magnifico. Le persone che abbiamo incontrato sono state sempre molto amichevoli e interessate a noi europei, anche perché loro non sentono molto parlare di noi. Molto americani non hanno mai lasciato la loro città natale e incontrato persone provenienti dall'Europa. La scena punk/hardcore è fondata prettamente sulla filosofia DIY anche perché è veramente difficile trovare centri giovanili, squat o posti supportati dal governo dover poter suonare. Loro veramente devono fare tutto da soli. Per questo è tutto molto difficile ma sicuramente una esperienza così lascia il segno a livello di motivazioni. Se solo esiste un posto dove poter suonare stai sicuro che loro ci proveranno a organizzare un evento. Ovviamente esistono anche posti "commerciali" dove poter suonare ma questo comporta spese molto alte, per questo noi abbiamo deciso per soluzioni "alternative".
We've toured the USA twice and it were dreams coming true. A lot of the music we listen to is from the USA and touring and playing there yourself is an extremely cool thing to do. The people are very friendly and interested in European people, since they don't hear as much about us as we hear about them. A lot of Americans don't even leave their own country, let alone, meet people from Europe. The punk/hardcore scene is very DIY-based, since there are hardly any squats, youth clubs or government supported venues like we have a lot in Europe. They really have to do it all themselves. And that makes it difficult on the one hand, but works really inspiring and motivating if you have experienced that. If there's a place where it might be possible to put up a show, they will try and do it. Of course they have commercial venues, but you have to pay the clubs to organize a show, quite the other way around to what we're used here.

7. Oltre all'edizione in cd, pubblicherete "Testimony" anche in versione vinile. Come mai questa scelta?
"Testimony" will be released also in vinyl version. How have you take this decision??
Il nostro disco precedente non è stato pubblicato in vinile ed abbiamo avuto molte richieste a riguardo, per questo motivo quando è stato il momento di pianificare questa nuova uscita abbiamo pensato che sarebbe stato interessante provare ad avere anche la versione in vinile. Grazie a Shield Recordings, etichetta olandese, siamo riusciti ad avere anche questa versione e ne siamo molto soddisfatti. Molte persone preferiscono ancora il vinile al CD, per diversi motivi, ed avere la possibilità di avere anche un LP disponibile è ottimo. Inoltre l'artwork del disco risulta molto accattivante su una dimensione come quella dell'LP.
Il nostro precedente album molto probabilmente verrà ristampato come LP entro la fine di quest'anno.
Our previous album was not released on vinyl and yet we got a lot of requests for that album on vinyl. So when releasing this album it was a big plus we could also get a vinyl version. Shield Recordings from Holland does the LP for Europe and we're extremely happy they are willing to do that. A lot of people prefer vinyl over CD, for whatever reason, it's nice to have an LP available for them. Besides the artwork looks really good on a very big front cover, the artwork deserves such a nice display for sure. Our previous album might be re-released as an LP later this year, we hope so at least.

8. Avete in programma un tour di promozione in Italia? Sapete già le date per potervi seguire live nel nostro paese?
Are you planning a italian tour?? Do you already know the date to support you in our country??
Questa domanda ci è stata posta molte volte! Non c'è nulla che preferiamo all'essere in tour e sicuramente torneremo in Italia dove abbiamo avuto alcuni dei nostri migliori concerti in passato.
Al momento però siamo molto impegnati su diversi fronti e nei prossimi mesi avremo diversi concerti in Olanda di supporto a "main" band (vedi STRIKE ANYWHERE, A WILHELM SCREAM, ecc.) oltre a dover lavorare su del nuovo materiale. Quindi per ora non so darti una data precisa ma molto probabilmente sarà in Giugno. Speriamo quindi di incontrarvi ai nostri concerti!
We get that question a lot, a lot! And there's nothing we love more than touring, so we'll definitely come to Italy since we played some of our best shows there. But the thing is that we are extremely busy, with the band first of all and we have a lot of cool shows coming up in Holland as the support of "bigger" bands and with some stuff next to the band. So an exact date we can't give you yet, but I think it will be in June. Looking forward to coming back to Italy, for sure! Hope to see you at one of our shows!
